Spinning Your Sound

In Spring 2023, Projectivity received its 8th grant award from NeON Arts, in partnership with Dept of Probation and Carnegie Hall. The grant funded a youth DJ program where students learned the art of DJing from Projectivity teaching artist and veteran DJ, DJ Xcel. Students spent 12 weeks learning how to use software and hardware, develop playlists, and perform live mixes. During the program, students engaged with multiple guest speakers, visted Schoo of Audio Engineering, did a guest radio show on MakerPark Radio, and performed at Carnegie Hall!

Music Production at MS 282

PS 282 students produced their own music during the winter 2020 School Media after school program using BandLab. They talk about the importance of creating music during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I don’t like hearing about coronavirus, when people die and stuff. But as Mr. Josh says, if you feel something, let it out in music! When I let it out, I feel like it’s gone.”

Special thank you to teaching artist Joshua Labidou, our collaborating partner Projectivity Group, NYC Council Member Brad Lander, the NYC Council Digital Inclusion Initiative, the NYC Dept. of Youth and Community Development, Principal Rodriguez and the staff of PS 282, and our participating students.

Enjoy the students’ music.

Diaries Album

Projectivity ran a 12 week program, teaching 16-24 year olds how to write songs and record themselves. Participants discussed different themes such as violence, bullying, popularity, personal sacrifice, and wrote about their personal experiences dealing with all different issues. The final project is titled Diaries.

This project is part of NeON Arts, a program between the Dept. of Probation in partnership with Carnegie Hall's Weill Music Institute.

Staten Island Arts Open Mic

This summer of 2016, Staten Island Arts hosted a series of freestyle writing workshops introducing students to creative writing and spoken word. The series culminated with an Open Mic which took place at the Staten Island Arts’ Culture Lounge at SI Ferry.

Staten Island Studio Sessions

After working closely with Staten Island Arts, Projectivity received a generous grant from NeOn Arts, a program of the NYC Department of Probation in partnership with Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute.  They initiated the Engineering Your Sound music program.  The 12 week course took place at the SI Makerspace and in the Cobra Sun recording studio.  The final event was held at 120 Bay Cafe.
